Redhawks Win Can-Am Championship
August 7, 2005
The Onondaga Redhawks are heading to their first President's Cup since 1993 with a 12-7 victory over the
Newtown Golden Eagles. The Redhawks were very eager to earn their league championship in over 12 years by hustling
after the opening whistle for all of the loose balls. Lead by goal-tender Jeff Powless, the Redhawks had an early
lead which they protected with a strong defense.

Onondaga RedHawks Win Can-Am Lacrosse Titles and Presidents Cup Berth.
Photos and story by Kent Lyons.
The Onondaga RedHawks’ Senior Men’s team won the Can- Am Lacrosse League Championship Friday Aug. 5th at the Gil Lay Arena in Newtown. After a persistent 12 year run of second place finishes the Onondaga Redhawks succeeded in capturing the Can-Am Championship. The last Onondaga Championship was won in 1993 the inaugural season of the Iroquois Lacrosse Association. The Onondaga team swept the perennial Seneca champion, Newtown Golden Eagles, four straight in a best of seven series. The win also secured both the Can-Am regular season league title and the playoff Championship.
The RedHawks will now have the honor of representing the Can-Am at the Presidents cup, The “Senior B” Canadian National Tournament held Aug. 22-27 in Waterloo, Ontario. The winning combination has been managed by longtime OAC members, Head Coach, “Ace Stout” and his Coaching Staff which includes Freeman “Boss” Bucktooth, Brian “Labrador” Phillips, and Onondaga stick-maker, Alfie Jacques who continues on in his father Louie Jacques’ footsteps as an important part of Onondaga Lacrosse. The Onondaga team appears very strong and should prove to be a strong contender in the tournament. The Native presence at the National tournament should be quite impressive, with the likes of Six Nations, at least one team from Akwesasne, and the possibility of Kanawake in the mix for a berth from the ILA and Quebec Leagues.
There can be no denying the Onondaga team has proved that persistence pays off and above all, the hometown boys can definitely get it done. The success of the RedHawks, has landed the Onondaga Lacrosse Program in a highly respected light. The pride that a lacrosse championship brings to the community is tremendous and all of Onondaga wins when the men do well. Congratulations are in order for the men in Red, Nice Job!

Redhawks lead Championship Finals
Three Games to None over Newtown
August 1, 2005
The Can-Am finals boiled down to the two teams with the best records this season Onondaga had 2 loses over the 14 game schedule while Newtown had 4 loses. This meant for the first time in 5 consecutive championship finals with Newtown, the Redhawks captured the #1 seed and home floor throughout the playoffs.
Friday night saw a packed house at Tsha’Honnonyendakwha’ for game one of the best of seven series. The Newtown began the game ready to defend their title as defending Can-Am champs by scoring the fist three goals of the game. It wasn’t until the last minute of the first period when Brett Bucktooth tallied the first Redhawk goal to end the first period down 3-1 to Newtown.
The second period saw a reversal of momentum of the game and the series. Behind the outstanding goalie-play of Jeff Powless stopping numerous Newtown opportunities, Onondaga was able to go on a 4 goal spurt and eventually scoring an additional 5 goals in the period taking control of the period and the game leading 10-6 going into the third period.
The third period saw the continued great play of Jeff Powless and Brett Bucktooth ending the last goal of the game as the Redhawks took Game One 12-8.
Saturday the Redhawks traveled out to Newtown to continue the series for Game Two. There, Jeff Powless continued his stellar play only allowing a single goal with 5 minutes remaining in the first period. Meanwhile, Ron Cogan scored the first goal of the game only 45 seconds into the contest! Scott Ditzel was able to add to the lead 10 minutes later. To be followed by goals by Dustin Hill and Brett Bucktooth to end the first period with the Redhawks leading the home team 4-1.
The second period again saw goal-tender Jeff Powless on top of his game holding Newtown scoreless for the entire 20 minutes of the second period. The Redhawk attackers were able to add 3 goals of their own, two by Brett Bucktooth and another by Ron Cogan. The Redhawks took a 7-1 lead going into the third period.
The third period saw the Newtown goaltender hold the Redhawk attackers scoreless for the final stanza. But the home team was not able to take advantage as the Onondaga defense also held Newtown at bay until there was only 5 minutes to play when the home team was able to add the first of their two goals to close out the scoring with the Redhawks on top 7-3 and holding a 2 games to none lead in the series.
Sunday saw the action return to Tsha’Honnonyendakwha’ for Game Three. Newtown began the game with a quick goal to take a 1-0 lead. But the defending Can-Am champs had a short bench and were unable to hold off the Redhawks as Ron Cogan scored to tie the game and Neal Powless scored to give the Redhawks a 2-1 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. The Redhawks then used ball movement and steady goaltending to claim a 14-6 win and needing one more win to advance to the 2005 President’s Cup in Kitchener, Ontario. The series now heads back to Newtown on Friday night as Onondaga will try to close out the series. Game 5 (if necessary) will be at Tsha’Honnonyendakwha’ on Saturday, August 6th at 7pm.

Onondaga Earn Tough Road Win at Niagara 6-5.
July 10, 2005
The Onondaga Redhawks traveled out to Niagara to close out the 2005 regular season. There they found the Hawks ready to defend their turf. Former Onondaga Redhawk player and coach, 1999 Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee, 2 time winner of MILL championships, 2 time winner of the Mann Cup, and 2 time winner of the Presidents Cup Barry Powless suited up for the hosting Niagara Hawks! Barry didn’t disappoint the home crowd as he opened up the scoring with an all too familiar blast from the outside. Another Hawk goal gave the hosts a 2-0 lead as their goal-tender stymied the Redhawks attackers.
The second period saw Redhawk goaltender Jeff Powless and his cross checking defense take over holding the home team scoreless of the first 18 minutes of the game. The Redhawks went on a three goal spurt of their own beginning with a goal by Dave Stout, followed by a Brett Bucktooth tally to tie the game, then Neal Powless with 2 minutes left scored to take the first Redhawk lead. But with 70 seconds to play, the home team scored to tie the game at 3. Then with only 30 seconds left in the second period, regained the lead again 4-3.
The first goal of the hard checking third period was a key to the win. A Niagara goal would give them a two goal lead with a hot goaltender. In the next minute, JD Jones was able to race through to score an unassisted goal to knot the game at 5 before Neal Powless was able to tally the game winner off of a feed from Mike Abrams. The last 6 minutes of the game saw heavy checks and steady goaltending as the Redhawks were able to secure a road win 6-5.
The Redhawks were lead by Neal Powless (2g, 1a), Brett Bucktooth (1g, 1a), Gewas Schindler (0g, 2a), JD Jones (1g, 0a), Ed Shenandoah (1g, 0a), Dave Stout (1g, 0a), and adding an assist were Brandy Gibson, Mike Abrams, and Dwayne Porter. Onondaga Wins in OT over Newtown
June 13, 2005
What a game! The Onondaga Redhawks defeat the Newtown Golden Eagles 5-7 in overtime! This game started with Dwayne Porter scoring in the opening seconds off of a beautiful feed from Ryan Lewis. Then 90 seconds later, Dwayne added his second of the game to give the Redhawks a quick 2-0 lead. Newtown scored their first goal of the 5 minutes in the first period only to be answered by the first of three Gewas Schindler goals to build the Redhawk lead to 3-1. Then Newtown ended the first period with a long fast-break pass to score as the buzzer sounded to end the first period with the Redhawks leading 3-2.
The second period opened with tough loose ball play and aggressive defense on both ends of the floor as the Redhawks battled the visiting Eagles. Gewas Schindler scored to make it 4-2 Redhawks. Newtown was able to capitalize and tally a power-play goal and add a second score of the period to knot up the game at 4.
Then the goaltending turned from solid to outstanding as Jeff Powless and the Newtown goaltender combined for over 23 minutes of beautiful saves in front of aggressive defense. Scott Ditzel, Mike Abrams, Clayton Jones, JD Jones and Brandy Gibson kept pressure on the Newtown attackers minimizing the Newtown possessions to one shot. On the offensive end of the floor, Brett Bucktooth, AJ Bucktooth, Gewas Schindler and Neal Powless kept constant pressure on the Newtown defense outshooting the visitors 2-1 in the period. The near capacity crowd jumped to their feet as Brett Bucktooth appeared to add the 5th goal for the Redhawks only for it to be disallowed due to a crease violation. So with neither team scoring in the third, the Redhawks and Eagles wet to overtime tied at 4.
In a game where heavy checks and quick slides made it difficult on both ends to find a clear alley to the goal, it was a lob pass that broke the scoreless tension. Two minutes into the overtime period, Dustin Hill was able to find the cutting Dave Stout coming from behind the goal with the lob pass. The pass froze the defenders as Dave was able to catch and score to give the Redhawks the lead at 5-4. Two minutes later, Newtown created a 3-2 fast break opportunity and tied the score at 5.
In the next possession, the Newtown defenders were penalized 5 minutes for fighting, 2 minutes for checking from behind and a 10 minute game misconduct putting the Redhawks on a 5-3 power-play. 10 seconds into the power-play, Gewas scored to make the score 6-5 followed by another power-play goal by Brett Bucktooth a minute later ending the scoring at 7-5. If these two teams should meet in the finals, it will be an exciting series.

Onondaga ended the second period scoring when former and recently traded Redhawk, Vern Abrams, scooped up a loose ball by the Newtown goal. Vern’s former teammates converged and checked Vern and the ball back into the crease, past the goal-line, to score again for the Redhawks!
The Redhawks used the momentum from the second period to score first to tie the game at 7. Then the defense and goaltending for both sides took over as neither team was able to score.
Then Newtown was able to break through and score 3 quick unanswered goals. Peter Benedict and Gewas Schindler were able to bring the Redhawks to within one. But the Newtown defense was able to withstand the 6-5 offence at the end of the game to hold onto the victory.
